Australia offers several migration pathways to help couples build a future together. Understanding the right visa option is the first and most important step. Below are the three main Australian partner visa pathways you should know before starting your application.

Partner Visa (Subclass 309/100) – Offshore Partner Visa

The Subclass 309/100 Partner Visa is ideal for couples who are married or in a genuine de facto relationship, where one partner is an:

  • Australian citizen

  • Australian permanent resident

  • Eligible New Zealand citizen

This visa is lodged from outside Australia. Once granted, applicants usually receive a temporary Subclass 309 visa first, followed by the permanent Subclass 100 visa after further assessment of the relationship. It’s a popular pathway for couples planning to reunite in Australia permanently.

Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) – Onshore Partner Visa

For couples already living together inside Australia, the Subclass 820/801 Partner Visa is an ideal option.

Key highlights:

  • Lodge the visa while in Australia

  • Receive a temporary Subclass 820 visa first

  • Progress to Permanent Residency (Subclass 801) later

This visa also grants full work rights, Medicare access, and the ability to stay in Australia while awaiting the decision—making it convenient for couples who are already settled together onshore.

Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) – Fiancé(e) Visa

If you and your partner are engaged, the Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa provides a pathway to Australia before marriage.

With this visa:

  • Your fiancé(e) can enter Australia to get married

  • After the wedding, you can transition to a Partner Visa (820/801 or 309/100)

It’s perfect for couples who are not yet married but plan to formalize their relationship in Australia.

Which Partner Visa Is Right for You?

Each couple’s situation is unique, visa history, relationship evidence, timelines, and future plans all play a role. Choosing incorrectly can lead to costly delays or refusal. If you're unsure which visa best matches your relationship, it's always wise to seek professional guidance.
