Australia Parent Visa Applications Moving Online from 22 April 2026

  • 2 min read

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that from 22 April 2026, applications for four permanent Parent visa subclasses will transition to online lodgement via ImmiAccount. Here's everything applicants and migration agents need to know.

What Is Changing?

Starting 22 April 2026, the Australian Department of Home Affairs will require Parent visa applications to be submitted online through ImmiAccount. This marks a significant shift away from the traditional paper-based lodgement process that has been in place for many years.

Paper applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances — specifically where verified technical issues with the ImmiAccount system have been confirmed by the eServices Support Helpdesk via the ImmiAccount Technical Support form.

Which Visa Subclasses Are Affected?

The transition to online lodgement applies to four permanent Parent visa subclasses. While the Department of Home Affairs will publish the full updated list on the relevant visa webpages from 22 April 2026, these are expected to include the primary permanent Parent visa subclasses currently available for family reunification in Australia.

If you are currently preparing a Parent visa application, we strongly recommend confirming which subclass you are applying under with a registered migration agent ahead of this date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still submit a paper application after 22 April 2026?

Paper applications will only be considered in exceptional circumstances, such as verified technical issues with the ImmiAccount system confirmed by the eServices Support Helpdesk. Under normal circumstances, all applications must be lodged online.

Do I need an ImmiAccount to apply?

Yes. From 22 April 2026, you will need an active ImmiAccount to lodge a Parent visa application. If you do not already have one, you can create a free account at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Alternatively, a registered migration agent can lodge on your behalf.

Will this change affect my existing application?

Applications that have already been lodged prior to 22 April 2026 will continue to be processed under the existing arrangements. The change applies to new applications lodged from that date onwards.

Should I wait until 22 April 2026 to lodge my application?

If you are currently finalising a paper application, the Department of Home Affairs suggests considering holding off and lodging online from 22 April 2026 to take advantage of the online system. However, the best course of action depends on your individual circumstances. We recommend speaking with a registered migration agent to determine the most suitable approach for your case.
