What Is SkillSelect?

The Australian Government then invites the most competitive candidates to apply for a visa.

Important: An EOI is not a visa application—it is an indication of interest only.

Who Needs to Submit an EOI?

You generally need an EOI if you are applying for points-tested skilled visas, including:

• Skilled Independent visas

• Skilled Nominated visas (state or territory sponsored)

• Skilled Work Regional visas

If your visa pathway requires points testing, SkillSelect is mandatory.

How SkillSelect Selects Candidates

SkillSelect ranks EOIs based on a points-based system, taking into account factors such as:

• Age

• English language ability

• Skilled employment experience

• Educational qualifications

• Australian study or work experience

• State or territory nomination (where applicable)

Higher-scoring candidates are more likely to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during regular selection rounds.

How Long Does an EOI Stay Active?

An Expression of Interest remains valid for up to two years. During this time, you can update your details if your circumstances change—such as improved English scores, new work experience, or additional qualifications.

If you receive an invitation, you must apply for the visa within the specified timeframe.
