Employer Nominated Visa

Employer nominated visa offers a number of options for skilled workers to work in Australia for an eligible Australian employer who nominates them for a position in the company.

402 Training and Research Visa

 

The Training and Research visa (subclass 402) is for people who want to come to Australia on a temporary basis to participate in occupational training, observe or participate in research as a visiting academic, or participate in a professional development program.

 

This visa has three streams:

  • Occupational Trainee stream: for people who need structured workplace-based training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise.

 

  • Professional Development stream: for professionals, managers or government officials invited to participate in a professional development training program in Australia. The program must have been arranged by an employer outside Australia and usually lasts up to 18 months.

 

  • Research stream: for professional academics invited to visit Australia to observe or participate in an Australian research project at an Australian tertiary or research institution.

 

Features

  • This visa is valid for the period of the position between 12 and 24 months.

  • Visa holder is allowed to travel to and fro Australia without restriction.

  • Visa holder must have adequate health insurance coverage.

  • For schemes where position must earn a salary, the wage must be at least at the federal minimum wage level.

  • Family members may be allowed to stay and work in Australia.

  • Only entry level English language skills is required

    Renewal of the visa may be possible.

 

457 Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa

 

The Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) allows an approved Australian employer to hire an overseas professional to work in Australia for up to 4 years. Visa holder may apply for Australia permanent residency after 2 years via the ‘Australian Permanent Resident Pathway’ without the requirement for English language skills assessment.

 

Features

  • Visa application is applicable for all occupations listed in the CSOL.

  • A large number of the nominated occupations do not require a skills assessment.

  • Exemptions apply for English language skills assessment.

  • After completing 2 years of 457 Temporary Work visa, applicant may apply for Australian permanent residency via the ‘Australian Permanent Resident Pathway’ without the high requirement for English language skills and work skills assessment.

 

Application requirement

  • Nominated occupation must be listed on the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL).

  • Applicant must be nominated by an approved business.

  • Applicant must satisfy the skills and experience required for the nominated occupation.

  • An overall test score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 4.5 in each of the four test components or at a level equivalent to the employment contract.

  • Applicant must satisfy any requirement for qualification or certification.

  • Applicant must have adequate health insurance for overseas worker.

186 Employer Nomination Scheme Visa

 

The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), also known as 186 Employer Nomination Visa, is for skilled workers who want to work in Australia. This visa involves a two-step process, firstly, nomination by an approved Australian employer and then an application under the nominated stream. It is part of the Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa programme and is a permanent residence visa.

 

This visa has three streams:

  • Temporary Residence Transition stream

  • Direct Entry stream

  • Agreement stream

 

Application requirement

  • Have been nominated by an approved Australian employer within the six months before applying

  • Are under the age of 50 at the time of application (exemptions apply)

  • Have the required skills and qualifications for the position

  • Have the appropriate English language skills (exemptions apply)

  • Meet the health and character requirements.

  • Meet the requirements of the applicable stream.

 

187 Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa


The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187) is for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia. This visa involves a two-step process, firstly, nomination by an approved Australian employer an​​​d then an application under the nominated stream. It is part of the Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa program and is a permanent resident visa.

This visa has three streams:

  • Temporary Residence Transition stream

  • Direct Entry stream

  • Agreement stream

 

Application requirement

  • Have been nominated by an approved Australian employer in regional Australia within the six months before applying

  • Are under the age of 50 at the time of application (exemptions apply)

  • Have the required skills and qualifications for the position

  • Have the appropriate English language skills for Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream and Direct Entry (DE) stream (exemptions apply)

  • Meet the health and character requirements.

  • Meet the requirements of the applicable stream.

 

Please note: The difference between subclass 186 and subclass 187 is the requirement on skills assessment and work experience for most of the occupation. DIBP also has a shorter investigation period for subclass 187.
